Former Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro has said trust between the players and the medical staff at football clubs is essential.

Carneiro left Chelsea in September after being given a touchline ban by Jose Mourinho and is currently pursuing a constructive dismissal case against Chelsea.

In August, Carneiro ran onto to the pitch to treat an injured Eden Hazard leaving then manager Mourinho infuriated as the Blues were temporarily down to nine men.

Carneiro, 42, was dropped from first-team duties following the incident, and eventually left the club.

Speaking at a medical conference, Carneiro said: “Trust in the medical team is absolutely essential.

“If you get a player to trust you enough to guide the progression, he is much more likely to be able to progress well and not have to rely on his innate perception of what he thinks is going on.

“If you are able to inform the right decision with confidence, he will trust you have his best interests at heart.

“The relationship with management absolutely affects how ready [players] feel to take on a risk.”
